What Happened
The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, creating a new six lane international crossing between Windsor and Detroit and a direct highway to highway connection between Highway 401 and I-75.
- ~30% of Canada-U.S. trade by truck moves through the Windsor Detroit gateway.
- $274M+ in trade moves through the gateway each day.
- 3 international road crossings now operate in Windsor.
Update History
First full month of traffic
Statistics Canada’s preliminary figures for August 2026, the bridge’s first full month of operation, show 134,900 Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile and 101,000 U.S.-resident trips to Canada by automobile through the new crossing. A further 34,800 commercial transport trucks entered Canada via the bridge. Over the same period, automobile entries at the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel totalled 348,000, down 35.4% from August 2025, while commercial truck entries at Windsor’s other ports rose 0.4% to 87,400. These figures count traffic entering Canada.
Investment Impact
Windsor's economy has long been connected to cross border manufacturing, logistics and trade. The Gordie Howe adds capacity and another route through Canada's most important truck trade corridor. That doesn't tell us which property to buy; it helps explain why transportation and international trade remain fundamental parts of Windsor's economic identity.
Jeremy’s Take
I wouldn't buy a property simply because it's close to the Gordie Howe Bridge. What interests me is what the bridge represents for Windsor long term: another major international crossing, direct highway connectivity and continued investment in one of the region's defining economic advantages.
Things to Watch
Cross border trade volumes, surrounding industrial and logistics investment, traffic patterns between the three crossings and future development around the corridor.
